BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION

Champaign Police conduct a comprehensive background check, including financial disclosures and interviews with character references.

POLICE CHIEF RECOMMENDATION FOR APPOINTMENT

The Police Chief will review your background to get to know you better.

CONDITIONAL JOB OFFER

A conditional job offer will be extended, pending all pre-employment testing.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT TESTING

Once a conditional job offer is received, get scheduled for required medical records review, plus medical and psychological examinations.

  • Police Officer Lateral (6280801) – minimum qualifications include you having successfully completed a Field Training Program (FTO) as a Peace Officer with an agency in the State of California.
  • Police Officer Recruit II (20003396) – minimum qualifications include you having successfully graduated from a POST basic police academy or recertification course.
  • Police Officer Trainee (20041404) – minimum qualifications require you to possess either a PELLET-B score of 48 or higher OR an NTN test with a minimum reading score of 70%, writing score of 70%, and video score of 65%. Additionally, you must possess a WSTB score of 320 or higher with a passing 1.5 mile run time (14 minutes or less). All tests must be dated within one year of your application.
  • Police Officer Trainee – Academy Attendee (19966348)– must submit a letter from a current POST basic police academy representative stating you are in good-standing and currently enrolled in the police academy. Verification must be on official academy letterhead and clearly denote the dates of enrollment.

Internal Interview

The initial interview consists of an oral board panel of three department employees asking you five-to-seven questions within a twenty-minute timeframe. Questions that are asked are relevant to the expected job knowledge of the position (Police Officer Lateral versus Police Officer Trainee for example) and should be answered from the mindset as if you were currently employed in the position with our department.

Command Staff Interview

The Command Staff interview generally takes place one-to-two weeks following the initial interview. This interview consists of two Command Staff members (generally both Captains) asking you open-ended questions to engage in conversation.

Background Investigation

The background investigation consists of a thorough examination performed according to POST regulations. You will be examined in approximately ten general areas. Additionally, you will be screened for any biases that could potentially impede your ability to enforce the law fairly and impartially. Lying during the background investigation process is the only automatic reason for disqualification. All other issues that arise will be investigated and you may be afforded an opportunity to explain the issue discovered.

Documents to begin collecting include: high school and college transcripts, Social Security card, military DD-214, driver’s license, birth certificate, marriage/divorce documents, citizenship documents, and complete a Personal History Statement (PHS).

Chief’s Interview / Conditional Job Offer

After your background investigation is completed, your background is reviewed by the Personnel & Training Supervisor, the Professional Standards Unit Lieutenant, and the Support Services Captain. All three will then come to a consensus on whether to recommend you for a Chief’s Interview. If recommended, you will be scheduled to meet with the Chief of Police. The interview will take approximately twenty minutes and will be a “meet-and-greet” where the Chief will get to know you and review your background investigation with you. If successful, you will receive a conditional job offer.

Medical and Psychological Examination

Once a conditional job offer has been received you will be scheduled for a medical and/or psychological examination. Both the medical and psychological examinations are conducted according to POST standards.

Final Job Offer

Once all the above steps are completed, you will be provided with your official academy start date.
